NEW DELHI – Shashi Tharoor, one of India's friendliest and most influential opposition politicians, was charged with suicide on Monday for driving his wife, four years after she was found dead under mysterious circumstances
. Tharoor has worked at a high level for the United Nations in New York, writing more than a dozen books, including several acclaimed novels, and served in the cabinet of a former Indian government.
He was widely seen as a prime minister's material But since his wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a hotel room in 2014, he has faced a flood of allegations, rumors and suspicions.
He has denied any foul play and his supporters in the Congress party, now leading the opposition of India, has rejected the case against him as politically motivated by saying that the ruling party had been threatened by Mr Tharoor and was trying to get his reputation to ruin.
In a explosion of Twitter news on Monday, he said the prosecution called it "absurd".
"No one who knew Sunanda believes she ever committed suicide, let alone my allowance," he said. "If this is the conclusion came after 4+ years, the investigation does not speak well about the methods or motivations of the Delhi police."
He added that officials had said in October that they would would not have found. everything against anyone and now in 6 months they say that I have supported a suicide. Incredible!
Police officers did not respond to multiple phone calls to get more information.
Tall, handsome, and worryingly self-confident, Mr. Tharoor, 62, regularly attends dinner in Delhi. He has a commanding voice, one rich Oxbridge accent and a large vocabulary.
In his social media posts, he likes to sprinkle a few 25-cent words like "farrago" or even "snollygoster" a room that wears his silk scarves and beautifully tailored suits, Heads turn.
But his stormy relationship with Ms. Pushkar, his third wife, attracted more attention than even he was able to.
Her marital problems were discussed on the pages of India's largest newspapers. She accused him in public of having a "scandalous affair" with a Pakistani journalist who, she added, could be a spy, both he and the journalist
A few days later, returning from a congregation of Congress Party leaders, he said he found his wife dead in a hotel suite, fully clothed and lying on the bed. One of the doctors who did the autopsy said there were injuries to her body, but he gave no further details.
India is getting ready for national elections next year. Several high-ranking officials of the Hindu nationalist ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party have accused Mr Tharoor of killing his wife. On Monday, many supporters of the party were malicious.
