The veteran was in critical condition and underwent surgery at Hartford Hospital, Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley said
The suspect, a 39-year-old city woman, was detained in a hospital where she had been treated for a puncture wound in her hand, Foley said. She will probably be charged later in the day for serious crimes, he said. It is unclear how she was injured.
The names of the official and the suspect were not released.
The police were summoned to the block of flats at around 10 am to hold a dispute between tenants and tenants. The officer was in the suspect's home when the suspect grabbed her in a sweatbox and repeatedly tipped her neck, Foley said.
Two building maintenance workers who pulled the suspect off the officer were heroes, Foley said. The workers were "stressed out" after the stab wound and needed medical help, he said.
Foley said the cop suffered "life-threatening, life-altering" injuries.
"She's tough," said Foley. Everyone is in love with them, as you can imagine there is a feeling in the scene. "
The officer's relatives were on their way to the hospital, he said.
