Before getting into the design, let’s discuss the display first. On the 17-inch model, Scar will be equipped with a 1,920×1,080 pixel IPS-level panel with a 360Hz refresh rate, 3 millisecond response time and 100% sRGB color gamut coverage. Asus says, this is the fastest monitor among all laptops. However, if you wish to use a higher resolution panel, a panel with 2,560×1,440 pixels will also be provided with a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, a 3ms response time and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. The display will be suitable for 15-inch version and 1080p 300Hz option.
The configuration will have:
- AMD Ryzen 7 5800H or Ryzen 9 5900HX processor
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 with 8GB VRAM or 3080 with 16GB VRAM graphics card
- Up to 64GB dual-channel DDR4 3200MHz SDRAM memory
- 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (RAID 0) storage
As for the design, the unique appearance is inspired by sportswear. The body is smaller and thinner than last year’s model, and the screen-to-body ratio has increased, partly because the frame around the display is slimmer. There is a diagonal line on the aluminum cover, and the dot matrix design extends all the way down to the rear edge of the laptop. RGB lights surround the front of the laptop and illuminate the large logo on the lid.
The keyboard dock has a similar slope, and most seats have a soft touch and feel great. The rest is covered with smoked translucent plastic, so you can see some of the underlying components. The keyboard has RGB lighting per key, but more importantly, ASUS uses an optomechanical keyboard with a response time of 0.2ms. The keys have 1.9mm of travel, are tactile and clicky, and assuming you don’t mind the extra noise, they can bring you an excellent typing and gaming experience.
The keyboard on the 17-inch Scar has enough space for a numeric keypad. For the 15-inch model, Asus uses one of the NumberPad touchpads. If you press the Num Lock key, the glass-covered touchpad will become an LED illuminated number pad. Press it again and it disappears. ASUS also adopted ROG’s Keystone II technology: insert the key into the groove on the right side of the keyboard panel, and you can let the system perform operations such as automatically launching games, changing performance modes, or unlocking hidden encrypted drive partitions.
To keep it cool, ASUS uses liquid metal on AMD CPUs, an extended radiator and up to six heat pipes. The new 84-blade fan exhausts air from the four rear vents of the laptop. Asus has even improved how the system removes dust from the radiator and fan while increasing airflow.
Asus has surpassed itself in the design and functionality of these new Strix Scar models, but I can’t tell you how it performs. Although I spent some time using it, it is a pre-production model, so it is not 100% the same as what they could get when they started delivering sometime in the first quarter. Similarly, neither size has announced prices.
