Officials said on Friday that the office of a medical examiner in Miami is investigating the death of a doctor who died about two weeks after receiving Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.
Pfizer said in a statement that it is aware of the death, but it does not believe it has any direct contact with the vaccine.
The death of Dr. Gregory Michael is being investigated with the Florida Department of Health and the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Darren Caplara, the business director of the Miami-Dade County Medical Examination Department, said samples from the autopsy performed on Wednesday have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Caprara said in an email on Friday: “The cause of death is pending completion of research by medical examiners and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Pfizer said the doctor died 1
The statement said: “So far, millions of people have been vaccinated, and we are closely monitoring all adverse events of individuals receiving our vaccine.”
Michael, 56, died on Sunday. He worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist in private practice at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. His wife did not respond to an interview request on Friday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement that it plans to evaluate the case “and keep abreast of the known circumstances and take any necessary actions.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration track potential side effects through the national electronic database and report Usually from healthcare professionals and vaccine manufacturers.
The FDA pointed out on its website that it is usually impossible to determine whether the problem is actually caused by the vaccine just by submitting the information to the database. Side effects reported to regulatory agencies may be related to existing medical conditions, prescription drugs or other health factors.
