Newton ranked first in the 2011 NFL Draft, leading the Carolina Panthers to the NFC Southern title three times in a row in the 2013-15 season and winning the Super Bowl trophy in the 2015 season when he was awarded the league MVP. He also won three professional bowls in nine seasons.
Newton had to undergo surgery for a foot injury and missed 16 regular season games in the past two years. He has also performed several shoulder surgeries during his career.
Newton should start in New England as the successor to the new Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, who traveled to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier in the offseason.
