Astronomers found dying galaxy bleeding gas into space

The team of researchers who discovered ID2299 and its imminent demise published their findings in the journal Nature Astronomy on Monday.

They believe that ID2299 was formed after two galaxies collided and merged, thus forming a new galaxy. The resulting galaxy has a story-telling “tidal tail” from which stars and interstellar material flows into space.

When the outer layers of galaxies are stripped off when they merge, they tend to form tidal tails. Although they have been found in hundreds of galaxies, such tails in distant galaxies are usually too dark to be seen by astronomers on Earth. Researchers discovered it when it first began to extend into space. That is where all the gas escapes.

The discovery suggests that major collisions may cause galaxies to leak vital gas into space, a process that will eventually starve them to death and prevent star formation, thereby killing them.

“This is the first time we have observed a typical huge star-forming galaxy in the distant universe. This is caused by a large amount of cold gas jetting and causing’death’,” the lead author of the study, Anna, a researcher at Durham University in the United Kingdom Grazia Puglisi (Annagrazia Puglisi), said in the press release.
