As coronavirus patients surge in hospitals, Spectrum Health reverts to visitor restrictions



Great Falls, Michigan-As the number of hospitalizations for the coronavirus climbs to a new high, Spectrum Health is restoring visitor restrictions to help contain further spread of the virus.

Spectrum Health announced the restriction on Wednesday, October 28-an adult patient can have an adult guest-and the restriction took effect on Thursday.

During the entire hospital stay, the guest must be the same person.

As of Wednesday, Spectrum Health has 1

62 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospitals in Western Michigan. This is much higher than the early highs that more than 100 patients may reach.

This number continues to climb. The number of hospitalizations on Monday was 156.

Statewide, there were 3,271 new coronavirus cases and 18 deaths on Wednesday. Kent County had 361 new cases on Wednesday.

Spectrum Health lists the following restrictions:

  • Two adult visitors are allowed for obstetrics and childbirth obstetrics patients. The two people must be the same person throughout the patient’s hospital stay.
  • COVID-19 patients are not allowed to visit in person, but the nursing team will coordinate virtual visits with the patient and family members.
  • Patients in the emergency department are limited to one adult guest per patient.
  • Except for patients who need help in activities of daily living or who have cognitive impairments, adult radiology and laboratory patients in hospitals or outpatients are not allowed to visit. These people will be allowed an adult guest.
  • Adult patients in the Spectrum Health physician’s office and surgery center allow one adult family member or guest per patient.
  • Pediatric patients under 21 years old are allowed to stay with two adult family members (only parents or guardians or their designated personnel) at a time.
  • For pediatric outpatient services, physician’s office and surgery, pediatric patients can allow two family members or guests per visit.
  • Pediatric radiology patients allow one adult family member per patient.
  • Pediatric blood, oncology clinics and infusion centers allow one adult family member per patient.

This restriction applies to the following hospitals and nearby doctor’s offices and ambulatory care facilities:

  • Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital
  • Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital
  • Spectrum Health Helen De Vos Children’s Hospital
  • Spectrum Health Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center
  • Spectrum Health Lemmen-Holton Cancer Museum
  • Spectrum Health Grand Rapids Hospital
  • Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial
  • Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital
  • Spectrum Health Pennock
  • Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital
  • Spectrum Health United Hospital
  • Spectrum Health Zelander Community Hospital
  • Spectral Health Ludington Hospital

All visitors will be checked and masks must be worn.
