Terms and concepts

Drug Target Network

A bipartite graph composed of approved drugs and proteins. These drugs and proteins are connected by a drug-target binary association.

Drug utilization

A strategy used to identify new indications (also known as drug repositioning, reconfiguration, or task reassignment) for approved or under investigation (including clinical failure) drugs that have not been initially approved or dedicated.

Disease Module

Represents a group of nodes (ie, proteins or genes) whose perturbation can be related to the phenotype of a specific disease (such as COVID-19).

System Pharmacology

An interdisciplinary, applying the principles of systems biology and data science techniques to pharmacology.

Human Interaction Group

A collection of physical protein-protein interactions (interactors) in human cells.

Network medicine

The discipline aims to use systems biology and network science methods to redefine diseases and treatment methods from a comprehensive perspective, and provide important applications for drug design.

Node or vertex

The basic unit of graphics. Nodes are usually visualized as circles (or other shapes), representing basic entities such as drugs and proteins.

Edge or link

The basic unit of a graph connecting two nodes. Edges are usually visualized as lines (with arrows if there are arrows), and edges represent relationships between nodes (for example, protein interactions).

Network proximity

Measure the distance between two modules, such as the drug target module and the disease gene module. Several proximity measures have been defined, such as shortest, closest, separation, core and center measures.
