Amazon announced the latest situation of its second headquarters HQ2 on Wednesday, and announced plans to hire 1,900 new employees near its northern Virginia campus.

Amazon also shared a new proposed design in another plaza near HQ2, which will have retail space and will serve as a “gathering place” for community events.
The company said it is planning to fill 1,900 positions in and around its second headquarters, and an updated design plan has also been released.
According to the company, the new employees will more than double the number of Amazon employees in Arlington, Virginia, where the company currently has 1,600 employees. The new positions span multiple teams, including Amazon’s Alexa and cloud computing departments, as well as its growing chain of Fresh grocery stores. Amazon said it will create approximately 25,000 jobs in HQ2 and its surrounding areas in the next ten years.
Amazon chose Arlington as the location of HQ2 near Long Island City in Queens, New York, as part of the much-watched second headquarters search. The company announced in 2019 that it would suspend plans to establish a new headquarters in New York after facing repression by local militants and city council leaders.
Amazon and construction company NBBJ will submit the second phase of the HQ2 construction plan to Arlington County officials on Wednesday. If the plan is approved, Amazon hopes to begin construction on Helix and other office buildings in 2022. Construction is expected to be completed in 2025.
Amazon broke ground on its second headquarters last year. Helix plans to build on a site called “PenPlace” within HQ2, which is expected to occupy approximately 2.8 million square feet of office space. Amazon also built two 22-story office towers in a development called Metropolitan Park south of PenPlace.
