The Belgian aviation news website Aviation24.be reported that the crew received an indication of low hydraulic pressure on the left engine and declared a PAN PAN emergency before turning to the flight.

The Air Canada statement added: “Modern aircraft are designed to use only one engine, and our crews need this kind of training.”

In response to a Reuters request for comment, a Boeing spokesperson has relayed information about the incident to Air Canada but did not provide any other comments.

As MAX recovers from a 20-month safety grounding, Boeing and operators are preparing to strengthen their review, but safety experts say that such failures are common and usually go unnoticed.

After the Indonesian Lion Air crash in October 2018 that killed 189 people, Max landed globally in March 2019. The Ethiopian Airlines crash shortly after takeoff five months later killed all 157 people on board.

Both crashes were partly related to defective cockpit software. There is no engine involved.

The United States lifted the 20-month flight ban on Max aircraft last month, and the Federal Aviation Administration outlined the details of software, systems and training upgrades that Boeing and airlines must complete before carrying passengers.
