Halle Berry withdrew from her role in the upcoming movie, in which she will play a transgender role after facing strong online opposition.
In an Instagram live interview on Friday, the actor said she had been preparing for the role, but was not officially cast.
“[It’s] A woman, in which a woman is a transgender character, so she is a woman who turns into a man. She is a character in a project I may be working on,” Berry said. She added that she wanted to delve into “that world”, which may refer to the transgender community.
However, after multiple misuses of roles in interviews, Berry was strongly opposed online.
She said: “This woman is very interesting to me, this may be my next project.”
On Monday evening, she issued an apology and resigned from the position, saying that “transgender people should have an undeniable opportunity to tell their stories.”
“At the weekend, I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of the role of the soon-to-be transgender man. I apologize for these remarks. As a woman with a gender orientation, I now understand that I should not consider this role, transgender The crowd should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their story,” she wrote. “I am deeply grateful for the guidance and important conversations of the past few days, and will continue to listen, educate and learn from them. I vow to be an ally and use my voice to enhance the display of the front and rear cameras on the screen.”
Berry’s comments caught the attention of the Twitter account of the Netflix documentary “Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen”, which was released last month and studied Hollywood’s portrayal of transgender people and their stories.
The doctor’s account asked Berry to watch the movie to “understand how the role transgender actors like you play in transgender roles has significant cultural consequences off-screen.”
After Berry apologized, the account thanked her for “listening and learning”.
In recent years, cisgender actors have faced controversy in playing the role of transgender. In 2018, Scarlett Johansson played a transgender role in the movie “Rub and Tug”, which caused strong opposition from transgender people and activists. A week later, she withdrew from this role.
