Despite mocking Apple for no longer offering iPhone chargers, Samsung and Xiaomi are now expected to follow suit and remove charging adapters from upcoming smartphones.
In addition to the release of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, Apple also announced that it will no longer include a charging adapter in all new iPhones due to environmental considerations. The move was publicly criticized by rival smartphone manufacturers Samsung and Xiaomi.
The day after announcing “iPhone 12” and “iPhone 12 Pro”, Xiaomi posted a video promoting Mi 10T Pro on social media, which showed the operation of unboxing, with the following comment: “Please rest assured, We did not exclude anything from the box.”
In a similar way, Samsung released a picture of the charger with the words “Galaxy included” and the following message:
Your #Galaxy can indeed provide you with what you need. From the most basic charger to the best camera, battery, performance, memory and even 120Hz screen.
Although these social media posts apparently made Apple’s decision to make fun of, according to regulatory documents, Samsung is now believed to remove the charger from the Galaxy S21, which is scheduled to be released on January 14. Considering that Samsung has completely removed its “most basic charger” post from social media, HTTech.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun also confirmed on Weibo that due to environmental issues, the company’s upcoming Mi 11 mobile phone will not have a charger. Jun said that smartphone users already have many chargers, so including other chargers with Mi 11 will cause unnecessary environmental burdens:
Xiaomi Mi 11 was officially released, with a new packaging, light and slim.
Behind the thin profile, we made an important decision: In response to the call of technology and environmental protection, Xiaomi 11 cancelled the accompanying charger.
Nowadays, everyone has a lot of idle chargers, which not only puts a burden on you but also the environment. We are well aware that this decision may not be understood or even complained. Is there a better solution between industry practice and environmental protection?
When the iPhone is shipped now, there is no wired EarPods or power adapter in the box, only the Lightning to USB-C charging cable is included. After removing these accessories, all new iPhones are now in thinner boxes. Apple touted the environmental benefits of no longer bundling these accessories, and pointed out that the move reduced carbon emissions and avoided the mining and use of rare earth elements.
As major competitors no longer provide accessories such as power adapters and EarPods, Samsung and Xiaomi may now think that consumers are ready to purchase accessories separately. As we all know, Samsung and Xiaomi follow similar trends set by Apple in the past. For example, Samsung laughed at Apple for removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 in 2016, and then made the decision and released the 2018 Galaxy A8 without a headphone jack.
