The earthquake hit more than 20 miles southeast of Mina, and aftershocks occurred nearby. Mina is located about 160 miles southeast of Reno.
Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Earthquake Laboratory, said at the time: “In the Reno-Tahoe area and the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys in California, a strong May earthquake was felt.”
He added that this is the first major change the state has experienced since 1954.
