MESA COUNTY, Colorado (CBS4) – Grand Junction authorities are tracking a bear who attacked a five-year-old girl outside her home early Sunday morning.
The girl ventured out on Sunday at 2:30 am to "track down sounds in the yard that she might have mistaken for her dog," a Colorado Parks and Wildlife press release said.
The girl's mother heard turmoil, inquiries and discovered a big black bear dragging her daughter.
The woman screamed and the bear dropped the girl.
The girl suffered serious injuries. She is at St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction right now.
CPW asks the public for help in finding the animal.
"Residents are asked to secure garbage, keep pet food, and immediately report all bears in the area or in any neighborhood," the organization said.
Hunting dogs are used in the search
